"The Mariners" in front of the main stand.

Posted by Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 9 October 2010 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

Part of a 16 picture photo-story of the South Shields vs Penrith football match held at Filtrona Park on Saturday 25th September 2010.

South Shields has had a football team since around 1889 and they used to be in the Second Division of the Football League, in 1926 they finished higher in the division than Manchester United. Times changed, and relegations followed relegations, until eventually the club fell out of the League and two migrations to Gateshead ensued. "The Mariners" now play at Filtrona Park in South Shields competing in the Northern League Division One since 2008.

Non League football really represents the grass roots of the game in the UK, it is played for pride and passion and not for money, these lads all have a job to go to tomorrow! Budgets are tight to non existent with family, friends, and neighbours all playing a part in keeping clubs running, I hope this series of pictures inspires people to get out and support their local sportsmen and women wherever you are, now and then the big rich clubs can manage without you!
