Historic County Durham

Posted by Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 22 January 2011 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

I'm pretty short of new material at the moment, also pretty short of inspiration and motivation to go out and get it (I'm going through another of those blue periods.)

So for the next few days I'll be taking some time out, perhaps tramping around with my camera, if the legs and hips don't give up. I'll be posting some stuff from last year's archives which I wasn't able to squeeze in at the time, I'll try and get around a few of your blogs as and when I can but I will thank you generously here and now for all of your wonderful comments and words of encouragement.

This is a strange one, cannot quite remember if it is an old Market Hall, Market Cross, or Town Hall now. Took the picture in Barnard Castle, County Durham last summer.

Now, this is going to be a totally useless comment..get ready. Somewhere near me is a small town that looks just like this. Same rounded old buiding in the middle of the road with relatively wide streets going from it. But I can't remember the name of the town, or the name of the building.....useless!

Sharpening at maximum adds so much to this street view! Wonderful B&W!

22 Jan 2011 12:04pm

@Didier: No sharpening used Didier, just two Photoshop plug ins, Lucis Art and Nik Silver Efex.

Franz from Baden, Austria

i do like your HDR treatment! this is an especially appealing scene, with this interesting structure in the centre! i wonder, too, what i could be.

22 Jan 2011 3:17pm

@Franz: This is not HDR Franz but thanks for your thoughts.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Nicely captured Curly! It looks somewhat out of place in this setting somehow..... ;-)

Reed from St. Louis, Missouri, United States

Intense tone mapping job here, Curly.

I don't get out much in the winter myself - like you, we have had more snow than we have had in many years past - snow, then a blast of arctic cold, more snow, then more cold - few days above freezing. My joints ache from the weather changes and my psyche aches from the continual grey skies. Luckily we have photoblogs to show us other places, huh?

Cheer up, mate - groundhog day's right around the corner. Someone shoot that damn groundhog!

I like washed-out clouds. Very nice pp Curly.

Rick from Toronto, Canada

It would have been a stellar frame in colour, straight-up mono, sepia, whatever, but the hard HDR treatment really suits it. The sky seems from another dimension altogether, adding even more to an already pleasing photograph.

22 Jan 2011 4:45pm

@Rick: This is not HDR Rick, but thanks for popping in with your thoughts.

Graciel.la from Vic, Andorra

Now know that it does not matter. It's a great photo. Well done

I remember reading these words in another picture ... moment of inner silence. We are in a constant thought, ringing in our heads ... feel the need to listen to the silence many times. A beautiful image despite all that is or can be. It is simply beautiful! Best regards, Adela

I like the effect of the processing....That round building looks like it would serve well as a market in the town centre.

Phil David Morris from Saskatoon, Canada

The treatment goes very well with the clouds and gives the detail a strong push.
Great angle makes you feel you would be driving around this like a merry-go-round.

22 Jan 2011 11:38pm

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Interesting structure in the middle of the road and very pleasing perspective along the street. Lovely detail and tones in B&W.
