Good Friday traditions #2

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 28 April 2011 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

This is part of a fairly long series of pictures taken on Good Friday (22.04.2011) in South Shields. I wanted to document some of our traditions which we have followed for over a century, and I wanted to depict them in the colours and styles that I remembered as a child in the 1960s, and for that reason I have attempted to replicate the slightly faded colours of old Agfa or Kodak prints using cross processing.

To try and retain some of that authenticity you will find pictures which are not particularly straight, perhaps not well focussed, or at an unusual angle, I wanted these to look like very amateurish "snaps" which might be found in any family album.

Rather than bore you all completely, I will break up the series with some other shots from time to time.

Here we see people arriving in the Market Place and waiting for the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside and the rest of the "parades" to join them in a public act of worship to mark Good Friday.

You could never have this in Reading as the pc brigade would say something like "the mayor cannot show any support for any particular religion"

Wonderful crowd shot - love the high angle. Everyone seems to be standing in perfect position for your composition. I like the way the faces are all turned a different way. The man with the dog is a great detail. And the banner with its message also adds much interest. The colour definately has that film stock nostalgia.

what a crowd! I love the little groups of matching people - the boys in blue, the boys in red, the girls in brown, the blue groups in the back...

I'm not sure whether it's your 'kodak' treatment that makes this looks so yesteryear...or whether it's the crowd in such numbers celebrating a religious festival - and in the UK...all without some loud group of fanatics, of one description or another, intent on hijacking the occasion.
Really good capture Curly.

Great shot of a community. A moment of waiting for the parade is nicely captured.

The image is wonderful, and wonderfully rich in the variety of humanity that makes a crowd shot so appealing. I also applaud this experimentation and the challenges it will create, and judging by the vintage veneer of this frame, the challenges that will be met.

Some of the best documentary images over time (like family of man) are those that give us an honest slice of time without forcing an agenda of style or view. I absolutely enjoy the relationships of the subjects in this frame.
