A few bars and a car park (Little planet Friday)
This used to be a really popular area of South Shields before the latest recession hit us, at weekends it was packed to the rafters. A number of pubs are in this picture, their names and ownership change so quickly these days but they were known as Yates, Atlantic, Vibe, The Scotia, The Ship and Royal, and The Criterion. One of them is about to become a betting shop in the near future if Ladbrokes get their way, such a shame!
In the lower part of this little planet is a small open car park, which is basically the footprint of a larger ugly multi-storey car park which used to stand there, it too had shops on the ground floor, sadly that retail space is no longer available or required.
We wait for a period of renewed growth and prosperity before our town centre begins to change again for the good.
