Silly Tuesday (club edition)

Whoever heard of a quoits club?
I bet the only games played in here will be cards, dominoes, darts, and pool.

That woodwork looks to have some age on it beneath the paint . . and, sure enough, I see there is a photograph of the Club Members online dated 1860 !

What's a "quoits?" Must be fun whatever it is:)

19 Jun 2012 10:19am

@J.R.: It's a game where you throw hoops over a peg. Yes, weird.

Michael Fresh from Chester, United Kingdom

Is it a political club....? The door has a nice finish.

19 Jun 2012 10:24am

@Michael Fresh: No, more like your typical working mens club, but quoits? I cannot imagine them playing quoits either now nor in the past.

Robert from BOUSVAL, Belgium

@Jules: I honestly doubt that anyone has ever played the game in this place.

19 Jun 2012 1:24pm

Harry from Apex NC, United States

The bright sun falling on parts of the door really brings out many wonderful shades of red, especially on that left panel with the edges of the molding and the bright red rectangle. I also find "QUOIT" a puzzle. On this tightly cropped type of composition, I always try to keep the verticals and horizontals parallel with the edges of the photo. In your shot, you let the lower right peice of molding creep out of the edge of the shot. But overall, I really like the shot.

19 Jun 2012 1:31pm

@Harry: I see I'm listing to port a little too, must have been the two pints of Banks bitter to blame for it :-)

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

A good picture ... I love the colors, tones, lights and shadows ... Magnificent ... Thanks for the explanation ...
A hug, Adela

Beautiful colors and highlights from the sun! So would you consider yourself a pro in any of those sports? :-)

19 Jun 2012 5:36pm

@Steven: No chance Steve, but I used to pretty good at pool.

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

We used to have one in our local pub. Whiled away many a happy hour. Like all those games there is a level of alcohol that is just perfect for it. and a pint or so of Banks Bitter will certainly do the trick:) Nice décor here too

19 Jun 2012 5:37pm

Such a lovely 18th Century word. Bet it's all whoring, gambling and drinking behind those innocent doors!

19 Jun 2012 8:35pm

Don Levesque from Saint John, Canada

Over here it was hard to find metal rings so we used "horseshoes" but we never had a club. ;-)))))
Happy ST Curly!

Founded in 1846 and still going ...and yes, we still play quoits on our pitches outside every week in the season. A hidden gem of Darlington UK and a great game of skill that we are keeping alive for future generations. Nice photo ...many thanks.
