The Great North Run is the world's largest half marathon and on Sunday 20th. September the 21st running of the event saw 54000 entrants completing the 13.5 mile course from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to the finish line in South Shields. Race organiser Brendan Foster, a former Olympian, thought that the 2009 Great North Run was the best ever.
This series attempts to tell a few short pictorial stories of the race, the organisation, the runners, and the spectators, on a day blessed with clear blue skies and warm weather.
