Moon over Marsden

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 27 October 2009 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

A trip with the tripod to the Leas overlooking the cliff tops in South Shields just in order to get a clear view of the full moon rising over Marsden Bay.

I discovered that shooting pictures of the moon is not quite as easy as it looks, and it certainly pays to switch off things like auto focus and auto exposure. Take a spot reading then under expose by two or three stops, bracket, but try to go for short exposures (the moon moves faster than you would imagine.)

PENTAX K100D 1/90 second F/11.0 ISO 400 450 mm (35mm equiv.)

Use control and your mouse scroll wheel to zoom the picture/page, then control and 0 to reset to normal size.

Nice moon shot curly, pity it's not perfectly round, some good detail and Marsden is lovely in daylight or moonlight. On my cathedral shot don't know where you are coming from with flat and needs sharpening, it may not be full blown colour like several of my shots but I don't think it is not sharp, better take a trip to spec savers, LOL!!

It's a good thing AM3 includes thumbnails on the blog watch, otherwise with the title of "Moon Over Marsden" coming from Curly I conjure images of someone's bum staring at me! :-D
Nice shot. And you're right about the movement, I've never had any luck shooting the moon.
What's that spot just above six o'clock? Is that where those &^$#! idiots at NASA tried to blow the thing up?

Yes, it's quite difficult to get the perfect day to take a pic of the moon.

In my case, the night was so clear, in your image seems that it's a little kind of fog in the air (pollution or whatever).

The most important thing, I think, it's to use a long lens (with my 200mm that I have now it's impossible), and use a tripod and lot of patience and try different days to get the perfect lighting of the moon.

Other ways of taking moon pics it's to get a telescope with an adapter for your reflex. In that case you get a 1300mm for little money compared to an expensive tele lens.

12 Nov 2009 9:35pm

Mohammad Darvish from Tehran, Iran

Hi Friend ... your picture is wonderful and really great... light and F are really good...you have a 450mm lens but I took that moon picture only with a simple telescope pipe ! I wish I had a tele lens... your picture is really beautiful...many thanks for your comment and your nice attention....
