An angel watches over.

Posted by Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 15 December 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Harton Cemetery, South Shields.

I was very happy with this one, a three RAW file HDR in Photomatix done as sensibly and sensitively as I could. I think the colour rendition, clarity, and revealed details make it one of my personal favourites.

A very clear, sharp pic as others of your HDR-work. The overall sharpness seems a bit strange to me, therefore I look longer and longer to it. A real joy for my eyes.

Nicely done Curly! Even though it is HDR there is a softness that makes it most appealing. Well done! ;-)

Curly, I think you've finally nailed my preferred style of HDR. Realistic colours, great detail, balanced exposure, no halos around high contrast areas. Technical details aside, it's a well-framed composition too with a strong cenrtal figure.

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Very beautiful light and nice composition. A great soft HDR, like that. And we can feel the quietness of the place.

ghetu from Mumbai, India

you know what, i used to play a strategy games called Heroes of Might and Magic. It was a series. I don't know why your photos remind me of those games, my favourites. even the setting is one straight from the game. your hero is supposed to heal and gets an extra mile to gallop on his horse if he visits this angel.

i must, must learn HDR.

I agree it is very nicely done one of my favs

15 Dec 2009 2:07pm

Henrik Herskind from Copenhagen, Denmark

I agree that it is a very pleasant picture to look at. The light is superficial as is the angel - making it fairy tale-like (stressed also by the very colorful tombstones in the left part of the picture).
One thing nags me: The specific angle of the angel lets us see a bit of the right "wing" in shadow. This led me to perceive it like the shadow of the figure projected against the back "curtain" - thus letting me believe - in this supernatural world - that the angel had been poorly implanted in the image. Like on a theatrical curtain.

I love angel statuary. I have a lot of stone angels myself. I like the rich shadowing you have in this image. It gives depth, an almost broodiness but not fully with the sun peeking around too. Much nicer than a full head on daylight shot.

a very moving, clear recording. It is the final resting place of men. The colors are excellent. Especially the clouds splendor like that very much. Regards Christel

Really well done Curly. It takes some time to get HDRs to look realistic but it's worth it.

Beautiful HDR processing here! Now the headstones really have that "pop" that you have captured here.

Your commentary makes a very important point. The people that we need to please most is ourselves. You could go absolutely crazy trying to please everyone on Am3; it can't be done. I love it when photographers say, "This pleases me." Bravo, Curly.

15 Dec 2009 10:20pm

The trees with no leaves on it beautifully frame the angel. Striking!

16 Dec 2009 1:22am

Seanóg from Dublin, Ireland

nice. There's a cemetery similar to this one near where i live as well. Its very old and contains the graves of many of Ireland's most prominent national figures such as Charles Stewart Parnell, Daniel O'Connell as well as Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera, Arthur Griffith, Kevin Barry, Sir Roger Casement AND Constance Markiewicz. Though i guess you might not know as much about those people considering you're from england. I don't think they teach such things in england?i think. Anyway, i reckon ill have to make a trip soon and see if i can get soe photos as good as yours.

I very much like the composition of the shot and the overall picture, but I must admit that I have a problem with the unnatural look of (all) HDRs... they just seem too artificial to me...

Wow! I came across this as I dawdled a dull pre-Xmas afternoon at work I used to live in Harton Rise as a kid, went to Anfield Infant School and played in the cemetary with other kids. We used to climb the trees and were always fascinated by the gravepits. Fab photo.
