"He went that way officer!"

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 20 December 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

South Shields' very own top children's entertainer "Tommy the Trumpeter" performing to a large crowd on Sandhaven Beach. Tommy is actually Ray Spencer the Executive Director of the Customs House in South Shields.

Another HDR conversion from a single RAW file in Photomatix, and the usual colour and details boost in Photoshop via the Topaz Adjust plug-in. Finally filtered in Noiseware Community Edition.

Here is the original untouched picture, straight from the camera.

PENTAX K100D 1/752 second F/5.6 ISO 200 300 mm

Looks like a great character - don't like the processing though. Think it creates a background that distracts from Tommy.

These portraits have an illustration/graphic quality. I would be interested to see an un-tweaked version for comparison. Does the treatment add more than it subtracts?

20 Dec 2009 11:24am

@grouser: I've posted a link to the original above, you can compare and make your judgements.

Utterly amazing work, Curly. The detail captured fom the RAW file and the processing have created a visual masterpiece. The fairy tale feeling works so well here to my eyes, in the context of the subject matter. One of the many things I so love about photography is how we all see things so differently. One man's (or woman's) idea of creativity is not necessarily to another's liking, which in my opinion mirrors the balance of life, just life through a lens.

Thanks for providing the original which is interesting to see..it has turned the photograph into something surreal..a bit like a children's fairy tale...perfect for this time of year!

Michael from Shell Village, United Kingdom

While the hdr processed image has real impact, I rather prefer the original as a matter of personal choice, but they are both excellent Curly. (Any snow your way ?)

20 Dec 2009 11:52pm

@Michael: We had a good fall on Thursday evening and a little on Friday evening, still not deep on the streets, but everything has frozen solid now. High pressure and sub zero temperatures overnight have seen to that, normally the salt in the air from the North Sea melts snow and ice pretty fast.
