The night stairs

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 21 December 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

This is a detail from the interior of Hexham Abbey in Northumberland taken on a weekend away from South Shields. These night stairs were used by the monks to access their dorms in the years after the Abbey was founded by St. Wilfrid over 1300 years ago.
This is a single RAW file HDR conversion using the methods described in the last couple of posts.

The brickwork leaps from my screen, so vibrant is the processing. Like an illustration from a book, this really appeals to my eyes and the scene has come to life. Fantastic work, Curly

strange -- i think i honestly like singe shot hdr conversions best -- the color is more 'normal' but the detail is wonderfully augmented. the classic hdr from 3 shots seems to extraoplate the color into realms that are quite 'fictional' and very good to that effect, but not as pleasing to the eye, in my opinion... excellent work here.

Fabulous HDR! Great composition and tones! WEll done

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

Beautifully processed...but the whole thing seems to be leaning to the left?????

21 Dec 2009 5:45pm

@Susan: Yes Susan, I think your younger eyes are better than this old codger's! I thought I'd rotated it correctly using a line of paving in the foreground as my reference, but looking at the top you can notice the tilt still.

i appreciate your kind words regarding my younger eyes, but having turned 57 yesterday, these eyes aren't as young as they used to be!! (And worse yet...had cataract surgery a few years ago, in both eyes, and ended up with "floaters" in both eyes now.......so I'm worse off than most!!!)

I like this extremely well - * perhaps the single frame make the image less harsh but still maintain the intensity in colors and shapes.

* intuitive reaction not a technical feedback. :-)
