Big red stop button.

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 22 December 2009 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

This is one of the escalators leading out of the pedestrian Tyne Tunnel at Jarrow, and at only 2 miles from my house in South Shields it's an easy cycle ride to get under the the River Tyne and across to the north side. I believe that these single section wooden escalators are still the largest of their kind in the world!

A single RAW file converted to HDR in Photomatix, curves adjustment in Photoshop, and cleaned in Noiseware.

Light at the end of the tunnel......? I'm surprised to read that these are wooden escalators, hence the fire sprinkler system. A great hdr shot.

that big red button is highly out of focus?

22 Dec 2009 6:56am

@Krishna Muroor: Yes, the focus point is much higher up the escalator, quite intentionally.

MrsAmber from West Wickham, United Kingdom

Great processing..it gives real atmosphere to the shot. I want to press that big button!

Chris from South Jersey, United States

very cool shot - I love how the eye is drawn into the shot and the HDR textures also work well for this bit of industrial architecture......my only suggestion would be to straighten a bit - it looks slightly crooked (to my eye, but that could also be me a bit off kilter).....

wow what a great perspective, I like also the work with colors

Stairway to heaven, just right at christmas time. The motif longs for HDR. I like that pattern on the steps.

Excellent image! Lots to look at. I really like the blurry foreground and sharp escalators. Your processing is a mystery to me. Was it your intention to tilt it slightly to the left?

picture perfect composition and nice effects. well done :)

23 Dec 2009 2:20am

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

Beautiful angle that you captured here. The processing is great and the escalator stairs actually look like they're carpeted. I almost thought this was a "Silly Tuesday" entry when I saw the sign on the ceiling. I've never seen escalators equipped with stop buttons that extend the length of the escalator's run.
