South Marine Park, South Shields (4)

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 15 January 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Another HDR from three RAW files processed through Photomatix and Nik Colour Efex. This is the terrace in the South Marine Park, South Shields.

Because it was a bitterly cold day with a stiff breeze, my three hand held bracketed shots have not been able to be perfectly aligned (obviously I had moved - shame I didn't take the tripod with me.) I hope the result doesn't detract too much from the nostalgic look and feel of the view.

I should note that this park has recently undergone a £5million revamp to restore it to it's Victorian splendour.

I like the color tone in this photograph, looks like it could have been taken yesterday or many years ago.

Very nice golden tones in this shot Curly, good that they are preserving the place.

Though the soft, a bit faint und miraculous light and also the virtuos processing make this image very satisfying, it's the lamp on the right side, which makes it outstanding - at least in it's digital version.

Beautiful, it's like an ancient postcard

Hand-holding sets adds so much to the sense of achievement, I always think . . at least, that's my excuse for leaving the tripod at home ! Love the resulting presentation here and how it seems to 'glow'.

You did a great job for sure...! It's a really stunning result even if your hands were a little bit shaking with cold ;-)
Love the colors and ... everything, that's a 5***** photo!

Some days ago I tried my first HDR - and got the same (minimal) misalignment despite the fact that I TOOK my tripod with me... nevertheless: Many thanks for the inspiration!

A beautiful nostalgic shot Curly! Sometimes our greatest successes come from the things we do wrong as opposed to what we do right! Nicely captured! ;-)

I hear the melody played with the accordion or the organ.

15 Jan 2010 1:47pm

To the contrary - I would suggest that you've added to the nostalgic feel with this image. With the sepia tone it strikes me like one of those tin-type postcards from the 19th century. I really like this effect.

I wonder what this little one is thinking? Hopes for Spring to arrive soon so she can run through this beautiful park? Wonderful processing to create this vision from another time!

15 Jan 2010 3:09pm

Love the color tone in this one. Again your hdr was soft and subtle, I prefer that far more than the bold contrasted images. Well framed, the child, the birds.. I think you have it all here and without a tripod you did damn well.

Breathtaking! A well-spent 5 million indeed. The presence of the kid there added a tinge of innocence and the subtle vignette wrapped it up nicely! And thanks for dropping by my page! =)

@Raz: That's my daughter, she's learning how to make snowballs!

Sandi Halverstadt from Leadville CO, United States

I am contemplating getting the Nik complete set. Do you think it is difficult to use? I love the effects you get in your photos and you may have sold me on it. I am going to try HDR today! I love your HDR shots. I love all of your photography. You are a very accomplished, creative photographer.

15 Jan 2010 5:34pm

@Sandi Halverstadt: I find the Nik products are very intuitive and a doddle to learn and use, a bit resource hungry but ultimately time saving and produce good results. I'm not so struck on the Pro Sharpener, it does little more than can be achieved with Photoshop's Unsharp Mask, Smart Sharpener, or High Pass filtering.

Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, France

5 stars for this gorgeous photography
