Warkworth Castle

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 10 February 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Warkworth Castle, Northumberland, home of the Percys, a notorious clan who fought for the Crown in early English history.

I had trouble finding the right spot to photograph this on the day I was there, the weather was constantly changing, it was wet, dry, sunny, windy, all in a few minutes. This was taken from a side road and my back was pushed up against someone's garden wall, I really need a shorter lens!

Anyway, single RAW tone mapped in Photomatix for the HDR, then a run through Nik Colour Efex in Photoshop. I'm pretty happy with how I worked it.

A great composition which illustrates quite an imposing presence that the castle has on the site. The grassy hillside provides a nice contrast here.

I think you picked the perfect angle...high above our heads and shows the details of the structure. I had similar trouble in Ireland trying to get a good angle to encompass entire castles and also include some land...it can be tough.

Wow -- Just love castles . If I was there I would be running around looking for the coat of arms, the heraldic crests, I love that even more than castles. Love your pics as always, this is a nice departure. I love pictures of people and I love the plastic skin I do. The real sometimes can be boring so I like the way you see things. Phil.

I used to look at the Cokin filter catalogues and wonder when you'd use a tobacco filter. It's the first time I've seen a similar effect for a few years but it works well here, the green of the grass is a little psychadelic though :-)
