Burger van, South Shields

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 18 February 2010 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

A lone burger van stored behind the Ocean Beach Amusement Park in South Shields, no doubt waiting for the summer season to arrive.

Three shot HDR processed in Photomatix. There are some issues with this shot, first it was hand held, a quick grab, therefore there is a bad alignment issue with the right hand door which was also moving (they were both open), and finally I've pixellated the registration plate to protect privacy, so that looks a bit odd too.

Got a real cracker coming up tomorrow!

I think the slight alingment malfunction worked here along with the muted colors. Nice job.

despite the limitations you alluded to, still a good photo with character. The HDR was def worth it. Adds a bit of mystery (?) to the photo.

Actually I respect you for pixelating the plate, I crop them or cover them too. I feel like I am stealing someone's privacy otherwise. Nicely done image considering your limitations.

A couple of bits of software you might want to try out; either might give you better results with "tricky" alignments than Photomatix.

First is Mediachance's Dynamic Photo HDR; broadly the same job as Photomatix, but offers something they call pin warping, where you mark points that should be aligned and it massages the images to fit. I haven't used it for a while, but I seem to remember I preferred its tonemapping to Photomatix, but that's a matter of personal taste.

The other is Photoacute Studio, which is a kind of Swiss Army Knife for multiple exposures - noise reduction, dynamic range (but not tone-mapping), focus blending, resolution enhancement, and/or eliminating moving objects. It's designed for use with tripod or handheld shots, and does a pretty good job of aligning and warping automatically. I use it quite a bit.

@Spike: Thanks Spike I'll take a look at those.
