Taking the lettuce

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 2 March 2010 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

A series of shots taken during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Newcastle -Upon-Tyne on 14th. February 2010. Newcastle is our regional capital and is only a few miles along the River Tyne from South Shields, the celebration lasted most of the the day and attracted huge crowds.

Much of the activity centred around Stowell Street which is the cultural base for a large oriental community.

Here the lion accepts the offering of a lettuce, a traditional feature of the dances used in the Chinese New Year festivities. I was on my hands and knees thrusting the camera between another man's legs to get this one!

Good morning, Curly,
the presentation is very interesting and I like color too. It seems several people are under a costume. Is it a dragon?
Nice day and thank you for your comment. Dear greetings Christel

Hi Curly, thank you for your comments.. It's very hard to comment your work.. for me.
I personally don't like HDR, that's why i can't give you meaningful comment..
I am really sorry about that.. Curly.. I sometimes would try to change it..

2 Mar 2010 4:32pm

Self-Indulgence from Chicagoland, United States

A bit too much contrast making it hard for the eye to understand. I reread your title about the Lettuce and figured out that must be a dragon head down there. I like the HDR on the ground and the building, even the man in the dress pants leg but I think all the glittering gold on the costume gets confusing :) Still a festive shot just a bit of work for me.

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

An interesting position AND place you put yourself in to capture this shot! It's original in that it is not a typical viewpoint captured by many. While it works well because of all the feet seen here, it was a bit odd to see the guy wearing these tennis shoes in yesterday's photo. They just seemed to be out of place in comparison to the more "formal" costume he was wearing.

Now I had some time to enjoy your chinese series!
The way you present them is very unique, most impressive colouring! How much details come to surface in your hdrs is amazing, great series!
