Marsden Bay HDR

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 6 March 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Taken from Marsden Bay, South Shields and looking towards Marsden Rock. Shame I couldn't have done this many years ago before the huge natural arch collapsed into the sea, but hey ho, hope you like it anyway.

Still a great place for bird watching with it's huge colony of kittiwakes and other sea birds.

Five shots at one stop intervals for this HDR, processed in Photomatix. Oh, and before anyone mentions it, scroll the picture up towards the top of your browser window, I know it looks as though the horizon is tilted, but you will find that it's perfectly horizontal (it had me driven mad).

PENTAX K100D 1/8 second F/11.0 ISO 200 18 mm

Very nice processing effects and the rocks in this are great in the foreground! I know what you mean on the horizon line - I often have the same problem and sometimes I even have to overcorrect so that it visually appears level - I guess it just depends on the other objects in the image.

Christel from Köln, Germany

Good morning, Curly,
this scene is handled very well represented. The color reproduction pleases me very well. Personally, I would like to receive the naturalness of my photos and edit it, therefore, quite rare. Minor corrections, I allow myself, if I find it necessary. Every day I see pictures of other bloggers aminus and learn something about how it might be better or not likely to be. I think that the representations of each participant, are in a
wonderful way, unique and expressive. I like your pictures too, but it's not my style. I may try it sometime and let myself be surprised by the results. For your presentation, I give you 5 stars ***** I wish you a nice weekend and still beautiful photos. Dear greetings Christel

I think this is my fave of the group so far......detail is superb....was there not much wind by the water that day? ..i find when i'm at the beach lately, the wind is so strong......the camera doesn't ever stay completely still......even on the tripod.....

6 Mar 2010 12:13pm

@Susan: There was a fair old wind blowing, but I was reasonably sheltered from it under the cliffs and sometimes I was shooting from inside a cave.

QB from Victoria, Canada

It's a great subject for HDR treatment, and a fantastic composition. Of course, whenever I look at an HDR image now, I find myself trying to imagine a normally processed single exposure of the same subject. Sometimes, HDR is really the only way to capture a scene properly, it seems. Tiny details, like those in this image, are a case in point. But HDR processing is also kind of addictive, isn't it?
