egads...i'm starting to wonder if 5 shots vs 3 shots makes this big a difference??!!?? I know I can do 5 manually....but seems like a bit of work, when knowing that a Nikon will do it automatically.....Ohhhhh....I'm seeing huge $$ in my head.....Do you think that's really the difference????? One way or the other, this shot rivals anything the esteemed Mr. Ratcliff has done!!!!

7 Mar 2010 3:17pm

@Susan: The secrets - set camera on tripod and aperture priority, set focusing to manual and meter for a correct exposure at your chosen aperture, now shoot. Now use EV compensation to go down in one stop intervals and shoot again at -1.0 and -2.0 EV, then shoot again at 1.0 and 2.0 EV. There you are, five bracketed shots on a camera that won't do it automatically.

Now that's a rocky beach. Not much sun bathing there. I like the dark clouds over the cliffs.

those clouds look ominous. but usually, the ocean is much more dangerous than coastal clouds.
perhaps back away slowly and watch nature from the safe window of a chip house.
great photo, curly.

Very dramatic. The HDR was worthwhile as it allowed the detail (especially the stones on beach) to come out. The colouring of the photo works well as does the composition.

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, United States

Not certain I understand why the manual focus......and I'm thinking if i let the camera take -2, 0, & 2, and then change the bracketing exposure to half's......i could probably do 6 shots that way.....don't ya think???? will have to try that, when the opportunity arises!!!

7 Mar 2010 10:15pm

@Susan: If you had a fairly wide open lens, say f5.6, with a subject that constantly moves (like the sea) auto focus might attempt to shift the point of focus between each shot, that is why I prefer to set manual focus before I fire off my shots. With a scene like this with a huge difference in light levels, the higher number of shots taken will capture you more detail in the shadows and highlights when measured through the 16 bit files that RAW produces, thus giving you greater flexibility in the Photomatix processing and allow you greater options in determining the final result. It is certainly worth trying to push the boundaries that bit further for a much larger range of tones.
