Gateshead College

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 30 April 2010 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Gateshead lies opposite Newcastle-upon-Tyne about 13 miles upriver from South Shields. The riverside at Gateshead is undergoing huge changes and regeneration. This is their new and very modernistic college.

An HDR made with three RAWs (tripod mounted) processed in Photomatix and Nik Silver Efex.

Just realised that this has been chosen as a "Spotlight" picture, I never thought it was that good, because of the car appearing.

PENTAX K100D 1/45 second F/8.0 ISO 200 18 mm

What a great PoV. The angular shape of the building and the not so angular car in the foreground combine to make a great picture.

30 Apr 2010 7:14am

@Nigel: Started off with no cars in sight, the lights went red and all of a sudden this thing appeared in my shot. Thankfully it couldn't move whilst I made the exposures.

Your processing is excellent as always. The photo itself, gives me the chills. That car there, alone... I get the feeling that human life is extinguished.

30 Apr 2010 9:53am

@Sonia Nansid: It was pretty quiet on this road, I have to say.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Nicely done Curly! I think the rejuvenation should include some humanoids also..... ;-)))

30 Apr 2010 11:28am

@Eric Cousineau: There is a one behind the glass above the traffic lights, although it is a sculpture!

Great perspective and lines of the structure, and that sky is so smooth. Love it.

5 May 2010 2:14am

Chris from Nantes, France

Funny you thought the car spoiled the picture. I often think highly geometrical pictures are enhanced by a disturbing, either non symmetrical, or "should not have been there" object. Often a human being or an animal b the way.
I ma not an HDR fan, but I like this one!

5 May 2010 7:38am

@Chris: I did want this to be purely bricks, mortar, and glass, but I can see the advantages now of adding some little human interest. My main concern at the time was that the lights might change and the car might move in between the exposures. I'd have to start all over again and hope for another quiet moment.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Congratulations on the spotlight!
