St. Mary's Gateshead

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 2 May 2010 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Another panorama made of the interior of the former St. Mary's church in Gateshead. It was quite a profitable afternoon away from South Shields to record some of the things at Gateshead Quays.

Three horizontal RAWS processed in Photomatix to make the HDRs, the panorama was stitched in Photoshop this time, still having massive difficulty in straightening out the "barrel" effect in the bottom frame.

Where id the people go ? Or is this a metaphor for the state of the church in England ?

2 May 2010 9:26am

@Bonvilston: Ah, that's because it is no longer a church, it is now a Heritage Visitor Centre, like a Tourist Information centre.

I'm guessing the barreling on a stitched image would be impossibly problematic. That said - I like the effect of the barreling here - playing against the arches. Cool impression.

Curly, this is awesome! There are so many textures here, with the floor, stone arches, and ceiling. It looks very well lit, but is that the result of your HDR work?

Superb stitching work! Not 100% sold on the level of processing here - it feels a little overly-busy - but it's extremely impressive nonetheless.

If you're using the Pentax kit lens at 18mm you'll have a goodly gob of barrel distortion before you even begin! Not sure it's possible to get rid of it in a stitched shot but if I ever find a way I'll be sure to share. As for this, striking shot and a great use for such a grand old building. I often think that the secondary lives of old church buildings are far more productive than their primary functions ever were.

Curly - wow! I don´t mind the bending at all, it´s just what you get with the wide angle - I have experimented with a "warp" tool after I merged the five shots, it´s quite a bit fiddly and it´s easy to overdo it :D
