River Tees at Barnard Castle

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 11 September 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

The River Tees passes below the 12th Century Barnard Castle.

Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.

With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive working market town also known as ‘Barney’ so there is plenty to do for families on a day out.

Three hand held shots to make this HDR in Photomatix and then finished in Noiseware.

Excellent image Curly! A perspective that directs our gaze following the course of the river in the opposite direction, up!. Until the end of the composition, a perfect sky! A magnificent edition ... for a global environment with some mystery in the density of vegetation and building on top of river bank! Best regards, Adela

this is a stunning image. i love the long vertical feeling, the way the river draws you into and out of the picture, and the green foliage drags you across the picture, and the ruined arm of the castle points up into that amazing sky. however, the sky seems overwrought to me and the little dark dots throughout the lower half of the image shout HDR. this is something i struggle with myself. i love HDR, but there has to be a way to use it that taps its strengths without making the image look strange. maybe we can learn from each other as we go along. thanks for your comments on my pictures. I changed my image today and reposted after correcting the white balance.

Great HDR! I wonder what we would do without all the tools and software! Perhaps we would have shots like Ansel Adams? Great colors and composition! Are you going to show this shot without HDR? Someone asked me that when I had an HDR shot too! Great job!
