Harbour View right alongside the river Tyne in South Shields, a bit spooky?

Great stuff, is south shields often foggy?

15 Apr 2011 11:17am

@The Mouse: It isn't to be honest. Only when we have a few days of high pressure and the sea fret builds up, but being on the east coast the prevailing westerly breezes tend to take it back out to sea again.

The right amount of fog in front of the inn with the background disappearing beyond the inn. A great perspective as well as the pavers lead your eyes into this compo. I would say the only thing "spooky" about this is the lack of people. The guests must all be cooped in their rooms, looking out their windows at the photographer in the fog asking each other, "Isn't that spooky?" :-)

15 Apr 2011 9:26pm

@Steven: Excellent thoughts Steve I wish this were all the case, but it isn't an hotel or an inn, this is someone's house!
Probably explains the lack of people at that time of morning, perhaps I should have explained in my preamble.
Hey, dont ya just love the little solar powered lamps in the small garden? Amazing how they store up the energy from the good sunny times eh?

Indeed, I note a certain tension, like everything's waiting for a cursed ghost ship to arrive...

Cheeky Mummy from Prescott, United States

This is wonderful, Curley! I love your work. Can you tell me, if you have a moment, how you maintain the color and affect of your picture when you post them. When I post my pictures (I have a mac) they look great - clear and sharp but when I look at them from my PC at work, they appear all washed out and blah. It's very disappointing.

16 Apr 2011 3:23am

@Cheeky Mummy: Well I'm afraid this will be a fairly complex answer. When I process all of my pictures in Photoshop they are assigned a "colour profile" (SRGB-IE1966) and this is the same profile that is assigned to my monitor and printer, the monitor has also been calibrated to show the optimised red, green, and blue pixels and the gamma, so in theory the colours and brightness that I see in Photoshop, on my monitor, or through my scanner and printer should all appear the same. That is the first point, secondly I apply a small amount of digital sharpening to those pictures which will be uploaded to the web and I use "save as" in Photoshop, rather than "save for web", I try to keep the file sizes between 200 and 300 Kb knowing that there will be some compression applied by AM3 servers which will degrade and soften the picture a little, unless you are a Premium user. Thirdly, my pictures often look drastically different to me when viewed on other PCs and laptops, mainly because they belong to people who are NOT using a calibrated monitor or screen, if we all had calibrated monitors using the same colour profile we would not have the same worries and consternations about how our work looks. Right now, I'm having to use a laptop until I fix my desktop again, and I have not found out how to alter the screen brightness and contrast, so calibration is going to be nigh impossible, I'm going to have the same worries as you. Anyway, jump into Google and find out what you can about colour profiles in Photoshop, and how to calibrate your own monitor, it's always a good starting point.
