Deputy Mayor

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 20 May 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

A more formal approach here for the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Eileen Leask and her husband Peter.
I placed them nearer to the window on the Beach Road side of the Town Hall in South Shields, the blinds softened the light just a little as I framed them in the entrance to the Mayor's Parlour.

Again the HDR tone mapping was done in Photomatix, then I masked the pair of them back in from the 0EV exposure, finally a little softening with the Lucis Arts plug-in. The three processes although lengthy gave me a result that I'm very pleased with.

Roman from Thiersee, Austria

fantastic work Curly, sounds like "hours" of post-processing ;-)
have you ever tried to omit the second step of masking in then 0EV by the semi-manual anti ghosting process in Photomatix?
I never knew this function until I watched a Video2Brain-film of making HDRs yesterday.

20 May 2011 7:01am

@Roman: I'll have to go and look for that Roman.

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

@PRASHANT: Ssshh.....don't tell anyone. Slip of the hand, too lazy to correct it.

Wonderful processing, Curly - you achieve an amazing depth to the frame. The soft tones also fit very neatly with the informal pose of their portrait.

Xavi Dom Buendia from Lewes, United Kingdom

very interesting processing and sounds like a lot of work but I´m not sure about the softened background, subjects seem not to fit well.

20 May 2011 10:22am

@Xavi Dom Buendia: There is an intention to have this one printed on canvass, that is why I processed it in this way, I think it will reinforce the look of an oil painting.

Williams from East LaHave, Nova Scotia, Canada

Curly you should be very pleased with all of these unique portraits which give us a formal yet intimate view of your town officials. Your fine processing gives a lovely warmth to what otherwise appears to be an austere room. Well done sir.

20 May 2011 10:43am

@Williams: You might get a shock when you see the true colour of the room Paul.

Lara from Vienna, Austria

BBM from Sussex, United Kingdom

Why is the background so out of focus?doesnt look right to me :) the couple stick out of the picture as if they dont match with the background! :)

20 May 2011 5:51pm

@BBM: It is quite deliberate to suit the idea of a canvass print that carries all of the quality of oil painting. I used the Lucis Art plug-in to smooth out the local textures in an attempt to replicate a smeary sable brush.

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

Wonderful portrait! Great job!
