This is what yesterday's visitors were watching, the start of the Saturday evening sea front parade during the 2011 Mouth of the Tyne Festival in South Shields. It always begins at Gypsies Green Stadium, and these marvellous street theatre entertainers then lead a way right along both beaches with the crowd trailing along behind them like the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The music and sounds are always stirring and eclectic, and there is fire and lights, sometimes lasers too. By the time they reach Littlehaven Beach there are thousands packed in to watch a fireworks finale.
