Battling the "Johnna"

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 5 October 2011 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

The John Reid Road is a tough uphill challenge for the athletes, it gradually and steadily rises for three miles until they get a tough downhill fall on to the Coast Road. This is where the tough get going!

Event: Great North Run
Where: South Shields
When: 18th. September 2011

This is part of a very long series of pictures telling the story of the 2011 Great North Run as it ended in South Shields on Sunday 18th. September. The 13.1 mile half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields is the largest of its kind in the world, attracting elite world class athletes and thousands of fun runners raising cash for their favourite charities. I've tried to create the whole series in a "Polaroid style" using black and white and cross processed colours, I hope you all can stick with it and not fall victim to boredom. I apologise if this series ends up being too long, I shot about 400 frames that day and it was a hell of a job to pull about thirty of my favourites out of the crowd.

Oh, finally, can I thank you all for your kind thoughts and good wishes yesterday, I'm humbled. After a day at work, my family and I enjoyed a delicious meal and a few celebratory drinks at one of South Shields famous curry houses, the prawn massala was delicious, explains why I couldn't spend any time on AM3.

The runner's movement and concentration are well documented in this image. Like STEED's comment I too was thinking Chariots of Fire when I first saw this except the beach is replaced with the road.

Big chap for a marathon runner, will we see pictures of the birthday tea?

5 Oct 2011 5:17pm

@The Mouse: No! I had to break my diet for one night, so you wouldn't want to see my beer belly, at least not until it looks as normal as others! Actually I didn't bother taking a camera.
