The Red Arrows are almost a permanent fixture at the Great North Run, there was shock, sadness, and prayers following the tragic death of one of their number, Flt. Lt. Jon Egging who was killed during one of their routines the previous month. It was feared that the RAF Red Arrows would not be visiting South Shields this year.
Those fears were allayed, and Flt. Lt. Egging's brave widow cheered the runners off at the start line in Newcastle before joining in the 13.1 mile run herself. The Red Arrows provided an eight man fly past at the Tyne Bridge and a truncated display at the finish line in South Shields.
