Acts of Remembrance #7

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 20 November 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

A short series of pictures recording and documenting a few events in South Shields during the period of remembrance surrounding Armistice Day 2011. All with a common theme showing mainly mono with some hand picked detail in colour, this will likely be red to signify the spilling of blood and selfless sacrifice as represented by the Flanders poppy.

The 15th. South Shields Company of the Boys Brigade, I just loved how this young lad was caught fully engaging with my lens.

Event: Remembrance Sunday
Where: Westoe Cenotaph, South Shields
When: Sunday 13th. November 2011

PENTAX K100D 1/250 second F/5.6 ISO 1600 82 mm (35mm equiv.)

It's nice to see that children participate to this Remembrance day…

20 Nov 2011 6:12am

@Calusarus: I think it's wonderful, a true lesson for them. Especially as they get to see and/or meet some of the people who participated in these great horrible conflicts, and to hear their stories.

Mandar from Kudal, India

Perfect Ambiance...Well Spotted....

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

This 'Acts of Remembrance' series is quite lovely and powerful. Each one has a different thrust, but all hold together with the common theme of a monochrome treatment with the selective color. Just some very beautiful shots, Curly. This one showcases great portraits of these boys.

Right down the lens, with a cap and a hoodie on it could appear intimidating.

20 Nov 2011 10:11am

J.R. from Urasoe City, Japan

Yeah, he was giving your lens the eye! Hope they never have to go through what the men went through

20 Nov 2011 11:13am

@J.R.: I have the same hopes, but I'm very worried about political developments on the European continent right now. Economic problems were one of the major factors in the build up to World War ll.

Dokmateo from Madrid, Spain

Great to see that young people participate to this kind of tribute/remembrance. Love your hint here and the selective color, it nicely spots on the red puppies on their berets.

20 Nov 2011 12:09pm

L'Angevine from Angers, France

la couleur me fait penser à la couleur de la mort et ces petiots avec leur uniforme me font penser aux soldats...donc à la guerre

20 Nov 2011 1:03pm

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

I am always pleasantly surprised to see that cubs, boys brigade, scouts, guides etc still exist. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they do, but given the 100's of different activities available to "Yuuuff" the attractions of these organisations have stiff competition

20 Nov 2011 1:14pm

@CElliottUK: I bet they all had a 3G enabled mobile phone in their pockets though :-)

Tomek from Poznań, Poland

Nice composition. But always when I see children in uniform I have a lot of doubts.

20 Nov 2011 8:54pm

@Tomek: Don't worry, the Boys Brigade is more slanted towards teaching religious lifestyle rather than military lifestyle.
