Acts of Remembrance #12

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 25 November 2011 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

A short series of pictures recording and documenting a few events in South Shields during the period of remembrance surrounding Armistice Day 2011. All with a common theme showing mainly mono with some hand picked detail in colour, this will likely be red to signify the spilling of blood and selfless sacrifice as represented by the Flanders poppy.

Event: Unveiling of Brunswick War Memorial
Where: South Shields Town Hall
When: Wednesday 9th. November 2011

Full story and more pictures - here.

I finish this series with what I consider to be my personal favourite. Hope you all enjoyed the series.

Coming up, the remaining two HDRs made on a pre-dawn shoot down at the beach, followed by some reflective glass inspired by Eric Cousineau.

Gemma Wiseman from Melbourne, Australia

The silvered rain suggests a serious silence! Very moving!

25 Nov 2011 6:20am

@Gemma Wiseman: This is an indoor shot Gemma, the textures that you see are on the surface of a recovered brass plaque which is almost one hundred years old.

Z from Shanghai, China

I like the silver tones and the focus on the names..

Florence from Paris, France

I really have enjoyed your series dear. A very inspired and sweet tribute to brave young men who have fought for freedom in all european countries. This kind of walls, with their names engraved is particularly
moving as we realise visually the incredible number of deaths it has generated.

A slap on the face.

Wonderful series. Great tribute so well presented. Beautiful frame. :)

Zorilla from H, T & E, United Kingdom

Poignant stuff. I always find it sobering to think that any one of these men could have cured cancer, built ships to take us to distant stars, bankrupted nations or mugged old ladies. We'll never know their potential.

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

This series has been very touching and so well displayed. I want to ask if there is a significance in the names that you focused on in this recovered plaque. I like the way you have captured the two faces reflected on the surface. Bravo on your series, Curly!

25 Nov 2011 1:44pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: Yes there was a significance in a way Judy, I was looking for names connected to my mother's side of the family who mostly originated in that part of the town. Unfortunately (or luckily) I didn't find any.

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

Wow....No words for this- powerful indeed.

25 Nov 2011 3:30pm

franz from Baden, Austria

those almost faded reflections of the men are great - took me some time of looking before i became aware of them! nicely spotted and turned into a very touching image once again! a very touching end to a successful series!

25 Nov 2011 4:14pm

@franz: That was my intention when I took the shot John, shoot at a pretty open aperture to thrown the faces out of focus and present the names pretty sharply, I was wishing to show the faces in a way that would make the viewer think about them without any definite recognition.

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

This has so much meaning and reverance. A beautiful image. This has been such a special series Curly. I think that these photos should be displayed in the town hall as a visual narrative for this dedication.

Lena from San Francisco, United States

Great frame. wonderful shot !

25 Nov 2011 11:23pm

janina from Melbourne, Australia

And, which one is related to you, curly? A man studies those names and ponders, what if I'd been there, would I have been as brave as these men? Would my name appear here now in remembrance for all eternity? The only name I recognise is Palin, of course, one Michael to whit! Great series, curly! :OD

25 Nov 2011 11:48pm

@janina: See my reply to Judy above Janina, I was looking for particular names but they weren't there. You have to follow the link to the original post in my other blog too, to find the personal significance.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Once again the capture of the reflection of the participants really brings the shot to life! I can definitely see why this would be one of your favourites! Congratulations on a wonderful series! ;-)

26 Nov 2011 12:20am

@Eric Cousineau: The event had a special significance for me Eric, the plaque came from a community that I grew up in many years later, and many of the families who raised the cash would have been connected to me in one way or another.

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Really love the reflections in this. Excellent shot and great in b/w.

Absolutely brilliant, Curly! You captured the details of this old plaque while also adding the personal touch of the reflections of those honoring those names. This was a wonderful series - worthy of a book of honor.

Don Levesque from Saint John, Canada

A beautiful closing to a great series!
Well done Curly!

27 Nov 2011 1:03pm

@Don Levesque: Yes, I really liked the out of focus "suggestion" of thoughtfulness in the faces reflected beyond the inscriptions.

k@ from Paris, France

An essential series, i love the reflection here, says so much.....
