Textural Durham

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 13 January 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Durham is a university city, so most times of the year you will find plenty of colour and life in the streets. I decided to go black and white with a few street shots to capture the age and sometimes textural decay of this pre-medieval city with its castle and cathedral. I rather like how this cafe wall rendered for instance.

You have sure brought out the living texture in this . . . and there is a strange feeling those folk are being Called by a Something up the road. They have no choice but to go.

13 Jan 2012 8:56am

@Ronnie 2¢: Oh I hope not Ronnie because just before you reach that skyline you will be welcomed by HMP Durham!

Life in the raw. What I mean by this is that it's a "real" street scene, folk just getting with their life, and you are a fly on a (crumbling) wall

Mike from Lichfield, United Kingdom

I've never been to Durham but after seeing this photo I'll definitely have a wander round when passing.

13 Jan 2012 11:38am

@Mike: Now that's a shame, worth looking around just for it's history. Apart from the cathedral and castle many of the university buildings are a good age too, almost as good as St. Andrews. Good for shopping too.
