Cemetery squirrel (again)

Posted by Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 30 January 2012 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Last shot of this cemetery squirrel, taken in Harton Cemetery, South Shields.
One of a number that were running about that morning.
Just look at the size of his finger nails!
It's easy to find their favourite trees, these nails tear chunks out of the bark after repeatedly climbing up and down them, now you know why sometimes this "tree rat" is not too popular.

I like the dynamic composition here, Curly. This guy has a bit of golden-brown on him - the grey squirrels around here are pretty much grey all over.

@MissT: It's quite amazing how many folks over here don't know the difference between the grey and the smaller red.

Chris and Ronnie were lamenting how they have pushed out your native red squirrels.

1 Feb 2012 10:57pm

pip from United Kingdom

we destroyed the trees/habitat that the red squirrels needed to survive. some very ignorant people !!! Good new for the haters of the beautiful grey squirrels is that SOUTH SHIELDS COUNCIL has put traps up to KILL them.
