A cool crisp crunchy sort of walk

Posted by Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 25 February 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A Sunday morning stroll through Jesmond Dene in Newcastle upon Tyne.
This is one enormous public park left to the people of Newcastle by Lord Armstrong before he upped sticks and moved to Cragside near Rothbury, where he installed the UK's first electric lighting in a house (not many people know that).

This park follows the course of the Ouseburn as it makes its way down to the River Tyne, and has a pets corner with unusual animals, a "real tennis" court, tennis club, squash club, old pavilions, and Paddy's Pond, not to mentiona rather nice restaurant and a very good tea room.

The Armstrong Bridge is in the background and in the spring and summer months you will find an excellent artists' market up there on Sundays, well worth a visit.

There are hiking paths in the hills all over the place. But what I miss the tradition of the Sunday walk. You dress up nice, there's a big lunch to be had, and you just walk quietly in fresh air, no cell phones, no hurry. There is that song "Nobody Walks In LA" for a reason...
