Silly Tuesday monumental error!

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 28 February 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Everybody that I asked just didn't have a clue what it is or what it stands for, but it stands outside of The Gate entertainment complex in Newgate Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

If any local reader knows what this silly big green thing is all about, then please get in touch.

It looks for all the world like one of those monumental errors that local politicians make from time to time.

28 Feb 2012 6:15am

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Ha! The style of art seems a little out of place here. For a public art monumental error - check this out!

28 Feb 2012 6:24am

@Stephen: That certainly is a hoot!

Roman from Thiersee, Austria

mysterious thing - but the green colour is awesome

At least a great subject for tone mapping dear !

28 Feb 2012 8:05am

@Florence: Funnily enough, I didn't bother, just used a Topaz pre-set and a little high pass filter to sharpen.

28 Feb 2012 8:34am

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

It's quite a sight and your composition and processing captures it terrifically.
I think you might be right about its origins. They have a really uninteresting eyesore in Weston-Super-Mare built at the end of the High St that shows how well the local Councillors are able to waste public funds !

28 Feb 2012 8:38am

Ank from Zwolle, Netherlands

Wow, great job! I like the object itself also, I don't see the error, it is just a matter of taste I suppose.

28 Feb 2012 8:39am

Skyriani from Nelson, New Zealand

very cool; looks like a giant lava lamp. perfect subject for HDR, Curly. And hello from Baucau where I've managed to get internet access this evening and am reveling in some aminus3

28 Feb 2012 9:51am

@Skyriani: I didn't bother with HDR, the processing was done in Topaz Adjust then sharpened with a high pass filter.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Well, it is a conversation starter. I like that green color, too.

28 Feb 2012 12:54pm

Ian Smith from London, United Kingdom

Reminds me of what happened in Macau before China (PRC) regained ownership - the local government spent shed-loads of cash on 'sculptures' all over the place - just so the money in the account wasn't also acquired.
UK local governments will only get given a 'suitable' budget each year if they spend a certain amount of different 'community facilities and regenerations' (if they don't spend it all, they get less the following year) - this looks like an expensive, erm... 'project'.

28 Feb 2012 1:08pm

Colors are top, along with the sci-fi feel, super neat !

An interesting text friend! It is true that governments do things similar or different we all leave with the impression that we are stupid and do not understand anything of what we are seeing ... Sadly commonplace ... I assure you Curly! I have no idea of what can be! The intriguing mystery does ... ¿The ship in which Superman came to earth cryptonita made of? A hug Curly! Adela

28 Feb 2012 1:21pm

Jules from Drayton, United Kingdom

quite a dramatic treatment to this frame - can offer no words of wisdom on what it may represent!

28 Feb 2012 1:43pm

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

Bloody obvious. It's an Analubic Transometer, minus it's reciprocating can follower. We've got lots of 'em down here. The local dogs like them a lot!

28 Feb 2012 2:45pm

A great shot for silly Tuesday. It reminds me of an oversize hood ornament that some designer created when he couldn't sleep late at night!

I think I see small bubbles - I love the colour - I vote "lava lamp" as well! The piece certainly does draw conversation...and this image is just fantastic, Curly! Beautifully processed and composed (or is it composed and processed? I guess it would be composed and processed, in that order) Excellent any way you slice it!

28 Feb 2012 3:31pm

Hey Curly - do they sell the American men's fragrance "Aqua-Velvet" in The UK? Clearly - here is the fountainhead for this ancient product. "There's something about an Aqua-Velvet Man."

28 Feb 2012 6:49pm

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

It looks like the world's largest lava lamp! What an interesting find in so prominent of a place. But I am sure it creates a lot of chatter and buzz! Great colors and processing!

28 Feb 2012 9:54pm

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

This be "Ellipsis Eclipses" by Danny Lane who said of it "With the spine like a mast and the glass like a sail, (it) will connect with the maritime tradition of the city." Sure looks like a marker pen to me.

29 Feb 2012 8:15am

@Ronnie 2¢: Oh well done Ronnie, thanks very much for your well researched answer, looking at some of the sites revealed by a Google search, it hasn't gone down too well with lots of the locals.
