Silly Tuesday intervention

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 22 May 2012 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Part of a series of pictures where I have used a light Orton effect, some silly humans decided to join in with this inanimate communication.

This is part of the public artwork "Conversation Piece" situated next to the Groyne lighthouse in South Shields. The installation consists of 22 copper-bronze statues near the sand dunes at Littlehaven Beach, South Shields. Designed by Spanish artist Juan Munoz they have been a talking point for the last few years. Oddly, from a distance you can never be sure who is talking to who – human or statue!

Nothing else while I care about the Orton effect only! Very nice!

Ha! The humans are perfectly placed in the scene, as if frozen in time. Reminds me of those human statues you see around shopping centres. And agree with Doug's comment above - your processing creates a very sci-fi mood.

very original, these statues around that give a disturbing character.

Really excellent - the odd statues and high-key effect gives the shot a surreal effect. Well done, Curly!

That's caused by too much beer? On the girl's part or on the artist's? :)

The idea seems a little too similar to the style & works by antony gormley maybe with the added fusion of weeble!
I like the high key Orten fx

Pied Crow from Abuja, Nigeria

Silly and creepy at the same time, I love that. I'm worried for the unseen infant that I assume is in the stroller...perhaps at risk of alien abduction.

Christine from Ellemford, United Kingdom

I laughed at Jules discription, I think he is right, I love them and I love Antony Gormley too. Great composition, to me the couple are hurrying through as they don't want to engage in conversation. i am not so fond of the high key Orton effect but that is just personal.

what do you have all to talk about a silly tuesday, seems like an inside joke...

22 May 2012 3:31pm

@Sue-Ann: Silly Tuesday is a very old "tradition" here in AM3. Tuesday is the day when we can throw out our daftest pictures, have a laugh with/at each other, and generally try to raise a few smiles. Why not join in whenever you can?

Don Levesque from Saint John, Canada

Superb one for Silly Tuesday!
Have a great day Curly!

Cool shot of the conversation. It was probably one-sided. ;-)

22 May 2012 3:48pm

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

From this PoV, it looks like the "real" people are being taunted by the statues. :-) Or that they're ganging up on them.

Fantastic shot! They look like they are talking about the people walking by! I like the processing!

steve Kopf from caln township, United States

An image that seems alien in nature. Otherworldly may be a better term. A 'human' chess game comes to mind, or something from a B&W Star Trek scene. Love the contrast and subject matter.
