A heavy load to bear

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 9 June 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

This is a view looking down one of many narrow streets, passages and courtyards that surround the Market Hall in Darlington, County Durham.
I find it to be a refreshing town to visit and shop in, as many of these narrow lanes have unusual, original, and local traders. It makes a great change from all of the national chains who are determined that our town centres should all look like "clones".

Historical centres often deliver more interesting and genuine shops or restaurants. A very dense mono to underline and emphasize the geometric shapes of this narrow street.

Fantastic control of the light! An impressive image of this beautiful place. I'm with you on patronizing the local shops rather than the "big box" stores.

My part of west London has long been proud of the 'little shops' and old-established specialist traders who gave the area a unique quality. Unfortunately, that same quality attracted the big-boys of the high street who could afford huge rents . . . The rest, as they say, is history. Or, was.

11 Jun 2012 7:10am

Joyce from Montana, United States

Cool atmosphere and process Curly. But for it's charm and light ahead, it might be the cover of a mystery novel.
