Drive in Saturday

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 4 November 2012 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

I just had to go down to the Bents Park in South Shields this weekend where the proprietors of the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park were hosting a short series of drive-in movies at night. I have to applaud them for thinking outside of the box and attempting something which is so different to what we have been used to in the realms of seaside entertainment in the winter months.

The first movie was aimed at kids, the later ones were of the horror genre for Halloween, you might notice a few steamy windows here :-) The other great feature was that the park was silent, the audio for the film was picked up by tuning in on the car's FM radio, so nearby residents had no noise to put up with at all - great idea!

With a bit of luck this picture will soon be posted on the fun park's website too.

Here's a nice bit of music to go with the show.

Hadn't been to a drive-in flick in years, used to sneak people and beer in the truncks of our cars, we partied more than watch the flicks;)

@CElliottUK: Ah, talking of Tina, can I thoroughly recommend Lisa Fischer, one of her constant backing singers? She also works on all of the Rolling Stones tours, look her up on Wikipedia, plenty of vids on YouTube too, she's a delight.

Christine from Ellemford, United Kingdom

Brilliant shot and a great idea. Looove David Bowie and Tina too :)

Great shot, Curly.
My word, if we live long enough, old things return. I wasn't aware of any drive-in movie theaters still 'alive' over here, so I googled it and find I am simply 'out of the loop'. I guess I'll have to pack up a ladder and take a drive! <grin>

Movies by car is here a strange thing. Of course, it can be mukavaakin, because the audience is watching the movie a lot.

You Know Me from Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I see I'm not the only one impressed by the moon here. It's remarkably clear in the shot; was it where you focused?

4 Nov 2012 3:17pm

@You Know Me: Actually I focussed on the screen, if you zoom the page up (ctrl and , or your scroll wheel) you will see that the moon is fairly fuzzy and not that sharp at all.

mo.langel from Courtelary, Switzerland

Excellent composition! Superb effect!

4 Nov 2012 3:27pm

Randy from Calgary, Canada

I believe all the drive-ins in Canada are now gone. Some drive-ins you had to mount the speaker to your side window and other drive-ins the sound came through your car radio.
It wasn't so great when it started to rain at the drive-in, but some people didn't care, they were doing other things besides watching the movie.
Great photo!

4 Nov 2012 4:34pm

Lluís from Canet de Mar, Spain

4 Nov 2012 4:56pm

Brings back going to the drive-in as a child. We went in a station wagon, dressed in our pajamas, back seat folded down, covered with blankets, as we were usually asleep soon after the movie started. Also memories of fogging up the windows later on.

A wonderful shot and one that makes me fondly remember the drive-in where I once lived in small town Ontario.

The image has a great light with the cars just outlined and not taking attention from the screen. I applaud their courageous initiative. I wish you had a better experience as the one I had in the only occasion that I went to a drive in.

5 Nov 2012 6:10pm
