Sleepy Tyne

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 9 January 2013 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Another shot of that glorious sunset showing the River Tyne at South Shields. The newish Market Dock housing development in the foreground occupies the former shipyards.

Working all day today, so I'll be back around tomorrow.

Re: the "newish" housing ... is it most common that homes are attached?

9 Jan 2013 11:49am

@Judy aka L@dybug: Now that's an interesting question. Historically, on Tyneside at least, terraced housing has been the traditional norm. Thousands of streets of terraced housing grew along the banks of the river Tyne over a hundred years ago, they provided homes for the families of shipyard workers and miners, the old traditional industries. More often than not the homes were built by the shipyard and mine owners, tenancy being ties to the job. After the second World War we went through a fifty year period of demolishing these old homes which were no longer fit for purpose, and secondary growth in new housing estates, mainly of the semi-detached and fully detached houses caused massive urban sprawl as towns grew. The vast majority of new housing projects, even in inner urban areas, are still of this type of detached houses, however some projects occupying smaller tranches of land are more suited to terraced housing which maximises the available space for developers.

Gorgeous colors, it sure does look like a sleepy little town. Very peaceful atmosphere. :-)

9 Jan 2013 3:30pm

@B.Sully: I might make it look like a "sleepy little town" but remember we have a population of more than 150,000 in South Tyneside.

Thanks so much for the info on your housing, and I'm happy to know the proper term is "terraced housing". I've seen a lot of that in images from the UK here on Am3. After WWII we saw a lot of 'duplex homes' built to accommodate families. They were generally two houses with a shared end wall. Then we saw condominiums and villas begin to take over, in all shapes and sizes, which are in essence, similar to your terraced homes.

9 Jan 2013 6:37pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: So duplex equates to semi-detached over here!

IF we are lucky, we sometimes can get an almost similar view in our neighbourhood...that is about 20 minutes away by bus. There flows a little river (not so big at the Tyne) and from the highway brige we can look into such a sky above many , many houses ranged on terraces and far away, at the back of them all, the silhouette of Mt. Fuji. Many lands and seas between us..and though...similarities exist!
