Togetherness and touching

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 25 March 2013 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Mrs. Curly is currently receiving a programme of radio therapy for her cancerous tumours, at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne; the journey from South Shields is tiring for her as is the long periods of waiting before the treatment begins. This is a picture taken in the Charlie Bear Garden in the Northern Cancer Care Centre at the hospital, a little oasis of peace and calm adorned with some pleasant and well thought works of art which provide a welcome break from these tribulations, as long as the weather is good. Even so, she enjoys sitting looking at them as we find time to contemplate the life that we have spent together for the past 25 years as a married couple.

Your family is in my thoughts, Curly . . I do believe those hares are the work of Gary Tiplady who is well-known for his wire sculpture around your way.

Memories for me of my time having radio therapy at Freeman. Contact Daft as a brush, wonderful charity to take you there, stay with you and bring you home after each visit. Takes the trauma out of all the stress. Excellent

Your story has left me devastated. I obviously know what's going on, you've been very open and honest, but there's something about your words and this picture that has really got to my soul. Be strong, both of you.

It is hard to come up with the right words. This is such a touching photo, along with your narrative and title. My heart goes out to you and to Mrs. Curly.

Such a reflective narrative that you have included with your post as you look back on how far you have come. I hope that this oasis truly has been an escape for Mrs. Curly.

Beautiful colors throughout, and I love the reflective marble.

A lovely little garden to soothe your souls during this difficult period.

the lightheartedness of the image, with the dancing hares and the flowers and the pleasant building, belies the seriousness of your being there in the first place ... may it give you some respite these days !!!

Gary Tiplady from United Kingdom

I am so glad my sculptures bring you some joy and relaxation in the garden when your having your treatment Curly, and wish you all the best. It was mine and Alan Dobson's (my sculpture manager) vision to bring some joy and humor to the Gardens of the Charlie Bear cancer care garden at the Freeman and the Royal Victoria hospital, which are both in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Alan and I have both had different treatments at some time or other at both hospitals and its our way to say thank you to all the great staff who work in these fine hospitals.
All the sculptures are kindly donated or loaned to enhance the garden through out the year for free by me Gary Tiplady. I thank you very much for you kind comments on my work. www.wire-sculptures.co.uk

@Gary Tiplady: Thanks for getting in touch Gary, it is really kind to take the time and leave a comment, I know eight months has gone by since my wife had her treatment, and it does appear to have slowed down the growth of her tumors.

ALAN DOBSON from NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, United Kingdom

Gary Tiplady is indeed the artist and a close friend of mine. Well known in France for his acting and across the globe as Jaws (Bond) actor lookalike.. Well worth visiting his site WWW.wire-sculptures.co.uk. You will not be dissapointed.
