This is why we crossed the river from South Shields.
There are a number of wholesale sea food suppliers lining the fish quay in North Shields and the variety on offer cannot be surpassed in the north-east of England.
We ended up buying some quite large fillets of a fish called "frog beard" - never heard of it before, but it had the texture of cod allied with the taste of haddock, so dinner was delicious! Price was ridiculously cheap at just over £2.20 per kilo, but I guess that now I've helped to publicise it the EU will slap a quota on the stock and the price will start to soar!
