Breathe in!

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 20 May 2013 in Transportation and Portfolio.

MSC Magnifica having just sailed past South Shields is carefully turned around just opposite the Nissan terminal in Jarrow. There were literally a few feet to spare at either end (on the high tide) as the three little tugs pushed and pulled to get her in the correct position to sail back down the river.

@PATRICK: Thank you

Christine from Ellemford, United Kingdom

I like the composition, with the cars , very nicely framed

20 May 2013 6:46am

@Christine: Actually it's quite fascinating to see all of these new cars being driven on to their own ships for transportation to Rotterdam, you wonder how they squeeze them all in.

Yvonne Simons (:|:) from Tilburg, Netherlands

The weather is beautiful in South Shields! Here the same :-(

20 May 2013 8:39am

@Yvonne Simons (:|:): It has been worse over the past couple of days, absolutely torrential rain.

A great shot of this floating "city"! Stands out beautifully against the ominous sky. Interesting to hear how they are able to fit into such tight spaces.

Catchy image! Tight parallel parking issue. What a bulky big ship against a serious sky.

franz from Baden, Austria

great atmospheric mood here over those stately ships ...
what interests me is why did she sail upriver in the first place? what's there to see?!? (sorry, i don't want to step on any patriotic feet here ... ;-)

20 May 2013 12:34pm

@franz: Nothing to see at all up there really, but they needed to find a large enough expanse of water to turn her around and face the right way for the outward journey. She couldn't sail out of the river backwards :-)

Mireille T. from Ribérac, France

Great composition! I love this ominous sky and the contrasts btween blue and white in the frame!

You reply to Franz answered my question, but it's still puzzling as to why the stopped there, unless people embarked to tour South Shields.
