Tommy's last stand.

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 25 July 2013 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Ray Spencer aka "Tommy the Trumpeter" is a very familiar and popular face in South Shields. His day job is Director of the Customs House Art Centre and Theatre, and his alter ego is "Tommy". Thousands of children in South Tyneside have grown up being entertained by Tommy the Trumpeter, singing along to his CDs and DVDs, and as they get a little older they take part in his beach party at the Amphitheatre on Sea Road. My own two kids have enjoyed his antics as well, and now after twenty five years Ray has decided to hang up the uniform and call it a (sad) day.

Here he is with the Harton and Westoe brass band commentating at the opening parade of this year's Summer Festival outside of the Town Hall, I'll have to make a point of photographing the last ever Tommy's Party down at the beach this season.

Have a happy retirement Tommy (Ray).

A wonderful tribute shot. Locally we have a similar person, called Captain Noah. He had a tv show and had the kids send their photos in for him to display on his show. My kids were thrilled to see their artwork on tv.

After 25 years, the man deserves it. Sounds like he did a bang up job though, and this is a great shot to pay tribute to him with, Curly.
