Ye Olde Chymist Shoppe

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 26 September 2013 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

So old in fact that they claim it is the oldest in England. This chemist is still trading (but more like a confectioner) in Knaresborough Market Place in North Yorkshire.

Something went terribly wrong with the colour temperature in Photomatix as I processed this HDR, I struggled to try and get some control again but eventually gave up. Instead I turned to Nik Color Efex to bring in these tones and add to the aged atmosphere inside the shop.

I think I ought to have corrected the colour temperatures in Adobe Camera RAW before importing them into Photomatix. Normally the camera gets it right more or less first time so I don't need to make any temperature alterations in RAW.

Pass the word around, Leslie from Norwich is back posting.

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

We here in Finland we say in such a situation ever, "nou hätä". It means that there is not a very large problem. It is supposed to be a little bit of English and Finnish languages mixed up. Minor color problems, despite the picture brings out the fact that we are in a store, the atmosphere is very old-fashioned.

Well, I don't understand all that about Efex but I like what I see - it creates a kinda time-shift within and without.

Well, this colour is matching well with the shop and the "old" ambiant...

If you wish, I'm still up for doing a bit of a training session on non-destructive editing in Photoshop. Anyway, I love the result regardless of whether you meant to get here or not.

Curly, I am so sorry, I had brain fade when I wrote the comment above, and thought I was talking to Christine. There's nothing I could teach you! Please don't think that this was some form of implied insult!!!!

26 Sep 2013 9:21am

@CElliottUK: Hey don't worry, it happens. I think the problem here was the mix of three different light sources, incandescent, fluorescent, and ambient, no decent median for the camera to choose.

J.R. from Urasoe City, Japan

I like the result;) Great PP

proper packaging and presentation. Bring in tax breaks for the independent retailer financed by hitting the large corporations I say. Let's get our towns individuality back

A real nice one here Curly. My husband is from Salford in the UK, and just loved this one. I read your comment about Photomatix, which I also use, I also have Cyber link, but think Photomatix, is better but Cyber link has a few tools that I like.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

A wonderful composition here Curly! An interesting juxtaposition! ;-)

26 Sep 2013 12:36pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

The toning does make the place look old indeed. The contrast with the outside is rather dramatic. It's good to see that I'm not the only one to have trouble getting just what I want out of Photmatix on occasion. In may case, it's probably not the program but the operator whose out of whack.
