The Great North Passion #4

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 25 April 2014 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

A wholly inclusive arts event in the Bents Park, South Shields featured a live broadcast on BBC One on Good Friday (18th. April)

A huge number of shipping containers were built into a "pop-up" cathedral in a typical cruciform shape to house the event in the Bents Park. A number of these containers were given out to commmunity groups throughout the North-East of England along with a sponsored artist, each group were tasked with making their own representation of one of the traditional twelve "stations of the cross" as used in the church during worship on Good Friday
to mark Christ's Passion.

Whilst I found that some this contemporary art making use of video projections and audio recordings somewhat underwhelming, other pieces were more poignant and meaningful and made my visit worthwhile. The live televised event was indeed very good, and a visit to view the huge cross of containers proved to be very colourful, at the least.
