A "beating the retreat" ceremony was held outside South Shields' Town Hall on the evening of Monday 4th. August 2014 to commemorate the commencement of The Great War in 1914. This followed a church service in St. Hilda's and the pipes and drums of 101 Rgt. took the salute from the Mayor and other dignitaries assembled on Westoe Road.
Light was strong, very harsh, and from the side, as the sun was setting in a near perfectly clear sky. A great case for shooting in RAW and developing your digital negative in Adobe Camera RAW to achieve a very reasonable balance between the hot highlights and the dense shadows. I'm pretty sure that this could not be achieved by shooting .jpgs alone without the aid of a small fill flash to light the shadow areas.
