Waiting for Bertha #6

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 17 August 2014 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Just over a week ago I was following the progress of Hurricane Bertha as it formed in the Caribbean and tracked northwards to the west of the Bahamas, eventually it neared Nova Scotia before becoming an extra tropical depression and heading across the Atlantic towards Great Britain and Europe. At this point the Met Office and television weather experts began getting all silly and excited, weather warnings were issued, predictions were made of a month's worth of rain in a few hours, damaging gusts of gale force winds etc. Needless to say, I thought they'd all over hyped the event, but others took heed and towns were totally deserted on Sunday, as if a Cat. 5 hurricane had driven everyone into underground shelters! I searched around South Shields for someone to photograph, for some catastrophic consequences of this weather event, for pictures of flash floods or damaged buildings - but all to no avail.

Yes, South Shields was bereft of people, and sadly missing much of the rain that was forecast, we got a few odd showers but nothing too heavy at all. The breeze was brisk at times but nothing to fear, it all ended up as a damp squib here - all very silly I suppose, but I bet others have better weather tales to tell about Bertha.

A view of the Herd Groyne lighthouse on Littlehaven Beach almost disappearing under the water on such a high tide!
