The Shambles, York.

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 13 March 2015 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

The Shambles in York is one of the oldest surviving and best preserved examples of a medieval street in Europe. The houses and buildings are so close together that they almost touch at first floor level. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city, filled with it's myriad of small shops and tea rooms.

What a wonder to behold ... and so very 'foreign' to my senses. I'd love to experience it!

13 Mar 2015 1:57pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: Yes, to a citizen of the USA it must be very strange to see people walking around streets and buildings that are at least 1000 years old.

Cozy and quaint image - I would not want to live that close together though.

13 Mar 2015 5:12pm

@Ruthiebear: I guess that might be one reason why public health was not so good in the middle ages :-)

Carol from Leamington, Canada

It feels so real.... like I could step right into the photo and walk down that lane... amazing. A little too tight for me but that's the way it was back then. It's wonderful that cities keep these old sections of town, they are so interesting to visit! A super visual!

@Carol: Virtually 70% of the city is like this.

All of these photos of old town streets are charming. I particularly like the wet cobblestones and blocks and the light they reflect. Lots of character.
