Laing Square

Posted by
Curly (South Shields, United Kingdom) on 30 March 2015 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I recently spent a day up in Newcastle with "Junior" and his girlfriend and decided to shoot some frames with the intention of making HDRs. Many of the scenes are "revisits" but Photomatix is so good at ghost masking now that I decided to get some shots with people in them. The process for masking out "ghost movements" is so simple and so good that you simply cannot be afraid of including moving people in your three frames now.

This is Laing Square with the old Oxford Assembly Rooms in the foreground, the Laing Art Gallery with its greenish glass is just about in the centre.

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

Superb city view Curly. Does the name of the square and art gallery have anything to do with the construction company ?

30 Mar 2015 6:05am

@Doug: No, I don't think there's any connection at all Doug.

Devi from Chennai, India

Old and new....wonderful view...
The parking lot in the foreground and that tree adds charm to this image:)

Irene from San Francisco, United States

I like how you framed this very much.

30 Mar 2015 3:27pm

@Irene: I had to position myself half way up a staircase leading to a walkway over the hotel to get this view.

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

The blues of this composition really stand out beautifully here!!
Great HDR processing as well.

@Steven: Yeah, and it only takes a few seconds these days once you have saved your own preferred presets.

I like how the curve in the road captured my eye

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

Such a contrast of styles and old with the new. I love "The Oxford". What a beautiful building. The art gallery looks so modern. I really like all the colors.

31 Mar 2015 1:12am

@Elaine Hancock: Sometimes city planners manage to get the right balance between the older historic buildings and the newer architecture, it's a pretty good blend in this corner of Newcastle.

kiwisa from North Shore, New Zealand
